What makes a leader a good leader?

According to the dictionary a leader is a person who guides or directs a group. But simply being put in a position of leadership does not make one someone worth following.

So what is true leadership?

Let’s take a look at some of the key characteristics of leadership as defined by some authorities on the subject.

1. Strong Leaders are Trustworthy

“Trust is the essence of leadership.” ~Colin Powell

Perhaps trust is the most important quality of a strong leader. One can attempt to lead people simply because of their appointed position–but, without trust, one simply won’t have much influence over others. People willingly follow those they trust.

2. The Best Leaders Are Always Seeking Improvement.

“Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” ~ Jack Welch

Will Smith’s recent films have turned me into somewhat of a fan. However, the video clip I share with you below made a much bigger fan out of me. You see, Will seems to really have an understanding on what it has to achieve true success and there is no doubt that Will Smith has learned how to live a Life Without Limits.

Perhaps some of you are thinking “anyone who has achieved the status in life that Will Smith has really has to understand it. “ Yes, that is true, to some extent. Certain thought processes need to come into play to achieve the same level of success. But I would bet that few of those actors and/or actresses have taken the time to really study the laws of success like Will has. And how many of them have the same goals that Will Smith has?

He said…

“Excellence is not an exception, it is a prevailing attitude.” ~ Charles R. Swindoll

But what exactly does that mean?

The key word in that quote is prevailing. The definition of “prevailing” is

predominant
generally current
having superior power of influence.

So…

To achieve excellence you you should think of what it is that you are trying to achieve, and how to BEST achieve excellence in that area. And you should think about it most of the time. You strive for excellence, and are currently working towards excellence.

Your dominant thoughts should be thoughts that generate excellence.

Your thoughts will then begin to have superior power or influence, and those thoughts then go on to influence your decisions and the way you act. Excellence comes from within.
